Galileo was first to use a telescope for space. With his observations, he discovered:

1)that the moon is covered with impact craters

2)sunspots

3)Jupiter's four largest Moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
(Seeing these bodies in orbit around Jupiter provided proof that all bodies don't orbit Earth, as was commonly believed back then.)

4)Venus has phases similar to the Moon's. When Venus is full, it appears smaller in size, and when it is a thin crescent it appears larger in size. This effect is just what is predicted if Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun as had recently been suggested by Copernicus

Edwin Hubble discovered with a telescope that the universe expands, providing strong evidence for The Big Bang Theory.

Sir Arthur Eddington confirmed Einsteins General Theory of Relativity by recording and measuring a beam of light being deflected as it passed through the Sun's gravitational field. The observations were made with a telescope, among other equipment. Andrew
