There’s a lot to it, more than can be explained here. Fortunately, there are a number of websites that can help you.

What you’ll be able to see depends on how large the primary mirror is and how well you build it (mostly the optics). eri

How to build a telescope is something that takes a whole book to describe. And it takes a lot of practice, because your first three telescopes are not going to be any good, no matter how hard you try. So you better start with cheap easy ones. Don’t try the complicated one until you build a few small ones first. Morningfox

Along with Eri, there’s a wealth of plans and books out there. The simplest one to make is the Dobsonian-style reflector. It’s nearly an even break for cost any more for build vs buy anymore too. Nyx

Fifty years ago, it used to be very common for people to make their own telescopes. Nowadays it has become very rare, because commercial telescopes have become relatively inexpensive. One result of this is that it is very hard to find the parts needed to build your own scope. Unless you have a very strong motivation to learn how to do this, and to track down the parts needed, I wouldn’t recommend building your own scope. Because the parts are hard to find, they are very expensive, and a home made telescope will cost many times more than a commercially built telescope. Labour is so much cheaper in China where almost all telescopes are made nowadays. Geoff G

You may want to think twice before embarking on this effort. You will spend less money, take much less time, and have much better results if you buy a scope rather than build it - unless you are sufficiently familiar with telescopes that you already know what you are going to do. But if that were the case, you would probably not be asking for our advice here. So I think you would be much happier if you buy your first scope instead of attempting to build it. Larry454
