You want to run the telescope with software (a lot more costly) or have software for training about astronomy? The latter is online mike1942f

It all depends on your pocketbook. The telescope offered by Edmunds is a nice starter for your youngster. This isn’t a toy telescope, but I think a beginner may be turned off by cheap optics. I think you have to gage your childs interest level.
I can talk to you for hours about metal detectors and what are relatively inexpensive, high quality detectors that again aren’t toys, but full featured entry level machines that are reasonably priced.
The Garrett Ace 250 is an excellent choice for a beginner, and many people I know started with them and still use them for certain situations or as a backup. Whites offers the Prizm series, and Tesoro has the Silver Umax which is another great entry level detector. You can also purchase used machines that may have been top sellers a few years ago for pennies on the dollar on Ebay or similar sites.
You can buy any of these without breaking the bank, and because of the success they’ll have, they will remain interested in either of these hobbies.
