i want to buy a really useful telescope, but i live in a city, what kind should i get?

You need to spell out what you’ll be doing with it better. Astronomical, bird watching, neighbor watching, etc.
I would try to find the local astronomy club in your city. They will usually have monthly meeting where can try out various scopes that people use. Many years ago, I bought an Astroscan scope and although it is low-power, I’ve had a lot of fun with it. Probably the one drawback is that it isn’t too handy if you want to use it for terrestrial uses - like birdwatching. It looks odd, but works very good for visual astronomy. For photographic astronomy, you’ll need a scope with a good drive system.
