McDonald asked: My question is, if we were to build a gigantic telescope that could show us incredible detail on planets, would we actually be seeing what’s happening on the planet in real-time, or would we still see what’s happened several minutes ago because of the fact that light has to travel down to us to see anything. Thats supposing we could view, or record live views through the telescope eyepiece.
By the way, I know how expensive and difficult this would be, but if we in theory did make such a telescope, would we be viewing in real-time?

Altair asked: I have seen wesites on how to build your own dobsonian telescope. I know that the primary mirrors of most dobsonian telescopes have a focal length ranging from 1000mm to 1200mm. But I do not know whether my hand mirror fits into this catagory. I don’t mind having a telescope with a small aperture.

On the Big Island in Hawaii they are debating on building another telescope on the mountain. But people are complaining about it. What do you think? Should they put another one?

Jason N asked: A typical telescope used by amateur astronomers has a mirror 20cm in diameter. With such a telescope, fine details can be seen on the surface of the sun.
Explain why a radio telescope would have to be much larger to “see”comparable details on the sun.
I think this may be explained by the formula sinx=1.22 wavelength/diameter.
so, the smaller diameter will give the telescope an advantage to see the objects. But why bother to build a large radio telescope?
