Nooone asked:

The diameter of the Hubble Space Telescope is 2.4 meters; the diameter of the new Chilean telescope is 9.6 meters.

How many times better is the theoretical resolution of the new Chilean telescope (the best possible resolution that the Chilean telescope could achieve if nothing else outside of the telescope itself acted to make the resolution worse) compared to the theoretical resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope? Again, show your work or explain your reasoning.

Raymond asked:

I don’t quite understand how they determine that the galaxies in some ultra-deep-field pictures are billions of years old… How do they determine that? How do they know that they are looking into the past of the universe? If they determine that the distance of the galaxies is, for example, 13 billion light years, that means that the light the telescope is able to capture has been traveling for 13 billion years, right? But then how is it that they determine that those are the early galaxies in the universe and that those galaxies were formed soon after the Big Bang? Can someone please explain with simple and easy-to-understand terms? Maybe some examples? Thanks!

Feafe asked:

The Hubble Space Telescope’s new advanced camera has a field view that is roughly square about .06 degree on a side.

What us the angular area of the HST’s field of view in square degrees?
it is NOT a sphere it is a SQUARE…. I originally thought it was .06*.06 but I do not think that is the answer

You know when you but a book about space and you see all the high detailed pictures of Galaxy’s. What is the mega pixels that the Hubble Space Telescope’s cameras have?
Hmm… I thought it would be over 50 MP. Thanks
