How much detail can you see using a telescope?

I know this is a broad question, but assuming I have around $500 to spend on a telescope and I bought the best one I can get with that money.

How much detail can you see?

Like the planets..nebula, galaxies, star clusters

Would I be able to see Jupiters Great Spot?

Could we have had a new space telescope with all the money we have spent on refurbishing Hubble?
