Galileo discovered, or at least became aware, that the telescope allowed him to see heavenly bodies more clearly.  The movement of the moon, stars, and planets became a fascination for him.  It had been theorized that the Earth moved around the Sun rather than what the Church preached, which was that the Sun and all other heavenly bodies revolved around the Earth.  Galileo studies indicated that the Church was wrong.
