- That the Universe doesn’t just consist of our Milky Way, and that many observed ‘nebulae’ turned out to be galaxies in their own right. Paper by Ernst Opik 1922 estimates the distance to Andromeda has to be extra-galactic. Work by Harlow Shapely estimating the size of our Milky Way. Edwin Hubble’s measurements of Cepheid stars in 1929 essentially confirm this.
- The discovery that spectra can be used to determine the distances to galaxies via their redshifts. Hubbles work from the 1920’s and 30’s
- Galaxies have reccessional velocities (moving away) indicating the Universe was much closer together at some point in the past, indicating there was a big bang.
- Rotational velocity curves of galaxies indicate there isn’t enough visable mass in galaxies. Fritz Zwicky proposes Dark Matter in 1934.
- The discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation, a product of the big bang by Penzias and Wilson in 1964.
-Work by the CfA redshift survey revealing the large-scale structure of galaxies, other redshift surveys include the 2DF Survey and more recently Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
- The COBE satellite in 1981 finds anisotropies in the CMB, which are thought to create the structures of galaxies we see today. Later work by WMAP.
- The High z and Supernovae Search and Hubble Supernova project teams finding that the Universe is currently accelerating, implications for cosmology. Indicative of Dark Energy.
