What is a good cost effective beginner telescope?

telescope
Michael K asked:

I’ve been told most telescopes are not very cheep. But what is a good telescope to view stars and planets (even inside a building), that is available in Canada and that is not very expensive.

-Thanks

Actually binoculars are a very good and cheaper way to begin a hobby/career in astronomy. They’re much easier to use and you can still see quite a lot of phenomena with them. michael c

About the cheapest telescope I would recommend is the Orion starblat 4.5
but if at all passable you should go for a 6″ aperture or more…
Here is a good place to start-

Start off by educating yourself by getting a copy of “Nightwatch” by Terence Dickinson.

It is an excellent resource not only for beginning astronomy, but aslo how to go about picking a telescope that’s best for you.

Now, as an example of what is available for under $300, look at this selection. Binoculars are a good starting choice, since you can use them day or night and are portable - Nyx
