    NASA launched the Hubble Space Telescope into space April 24, 1990. This telescope was named after the Edwin Hubble, an American astronomer. bermudiana

    The Hubble Space Telescope.

    It had the most precisely ground flawed optics of any telescope ever built. For a couple years, it earned the name The Hubble Space Paperweight. But even better corrective optics, sort of like glasses, were constructed, and it has been an incredibly awesome astronomical tool and computer wallpaper image generator ever since.

    The last servicing mission is scheduled for this Fall. I’ve met Andrew Fuestel, one of the astronauts on the mission, who trained to do the servicing. He gave a great set of talks about his training and upcoming missions for the local astronomy clubs and the greater area public.

    The NGST (the James Webb Space Telescope) is billed as the even bigger and better follow on telescope. But it isn’t a visible light telescope. It will certainly be sad to see the HST die without a visible light replacement. But the HST was built for a specific mission - determine the Hubble constant. And that mission is over. The HST gets used for lots of other great science. suitti
