They may not make it out of the galaxy tho, it's a long way before they can gather energy from another star. So they may not even make it to the next sun which is light years away. (Our galaxy is HUGE compared to how fast our probes can go). Voyager 1, Voyager 2, Pioneer 10, and Pioneer 11 are "escaping the solar system," and it is probably one of them that you heard about.
