What’s the best telescope for seeing far away objects?

telescope
Jacob asked:

I’m really interested in astronomy, and want a good telescope to see objects that are very far away from me.

hubble space scope. or google earth.

    Newtonian.

    Refractors aren’t really good.

go to google to find out or look around

I just bought the astrocan and it works really really well. This place has a good selection and prices.

A reflecting telescope that is at least 100x magnification

Well, everything in the sky is pretty far away from us, by Earth standards. But to see the farthest objects, aperture is the key: the larger the telescope’s aperture, the farther you’ll be able to see.

The farthest object i’ve seen myself is the quasar 3C273, which is 3 billion light years away. I saw it in my 10-inch Newtonian reflector. It looked like a very faint 12th magnitude star.

There is no best telescope. It really depends on what you want to concentrate on. If it’s Planets then a Refracting Telescope. If it’s diffuse Deep Sky Objects then a Newtonian. For an ‘all round’ performance you might want a hybrid like a Cassegrain.

    A real LOOOOONG telescope.

The further it reaches the closer it will be to far away objects.

  10. George N Says:

All other things being equal, the telescope with the largest aperture collects the most light, making it easier to see faint objects.

Of course, that comes with trade-offs. Large aperture scopes are harder to tote around, for example.

They have sooo many I can’t imagine picking just one. It would depend completely on your budget and desires. Some are just basic and some are so complex they’ll cook breakfast in bed while they’re vacuuming.
