I’m sorry that I’m going against your wishes, but you aren’t going to find a cheaper, more reliable telescope than this:. These were constructed for the International Year of Astronomy by a group of astronomers and engineers, and were made to be non-profit. They are quite low power (basically just what Galileo used, but better), but at less than 30 dollars after shipping (and you will have to supply your own tripod), they are still a phenomenal deal.

Within the confines of London, this is the only store I can recommend:

    THE WIDESCREEN CENTRE LTD.
    47, Dorset Street,
    LONDON W1U 7ND

“Cheap” is relative. Avoid department stores which sell mainly toy junk. The above location sells good quality scopes with a wide range of prices, depending on the manufacturer. Of course, you can save money ordering online and possibly from other vendors. But walking in to the above store will give you some idea of the various products.

There are probably a lot of places selling cheap telescopes. Unfortunately, there are no good cheap telescopes for serious astronomical viewing. Expect to pay at least $200 US (whatever the exchange rate is these days) for a decent scope. At this price, you can get a 6-inch reflector on a Dobsonian mount, with an eyepiece or two. For less money, a good pair of binoculars (7×50s or larger) and an inexpensive tripod would be a far better choice than a cheap telescope.
